Who We Are
THEATRE DEPARTMENT
Ruthie Tutterow (Director of Fine and Performing Arts) – Ruthie Tutterow heads up the Fine and Performing Arts Department at Greensboro Day School and has also taught at Morehead Elementary, Caldwell Academy, and has been an adjunct faculty member at Guilford Technical Community College and Salem College. She has performed and directed professionally in theatres across the state including Triad Stage, Lees McRae Summer Theatre, North Carolina Theatre, Temple Theatre and in various community theatres as well. She has also been seen in films and commercials. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Drama from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Master of Fine Arts in Acting and Directing from UNC-Greensboro. She also received her NC Teaching Certification in Drama and Speech from UNCG. She still enjoys acting when time permits—recent roles have included Hattie in Kiss Me Kate, Parthy in Showboat, Phyllis Rogers Stone in Follies, Agnes in I Do! I Do!, Emma Goldman in Ragtime, Jellylorum in Cats, and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Ruthie and her husband Alan have 2 children: Kevin and Laura (GDS class of 2017).
Denise Johnson (Production Manager, Choreographer, Assistant Director) - Denise Johnson is an award-winning director, choreographer and musical theatre performer. She has performed in, directed and choreographed for many professional theatres across the country including The York Theatre Company, The North Carolina Theatre, Flat Rock Playhouse, Signature Theatre, Houston TUTS, St. Louis MUNY and The 5th Avenue Theatre. She has been featured with Steve Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers in multiple shows at The Forum in Myrtle Beach, SC, starred in the wildly popular, original musical Summer of '66 at The Crook and Chase Theatre, was a regular performer on TNN's "Crook and Chase" show and was a back-up vocalist for Curb Records recording artist Ronnie McDowell (the "official voice of Elvis!") Denise has been known as one of the top choreographers for competitive high school show choirs in the country. Her work has earned her over 250 National Championships, Grand Championships and Best Choreography awards. She is in high demand as an adjudicator and clinician, judging major show choir competitions and teaching high school and college level show choir / musical theatre camps and master classes around the U.S. She studied Musical Theatre at Catawba College and Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. Denise and her husband Marshall have one child: Greta (GDS class of 2026).
Dana Lowell (Technical Director, Lighting and Set Designer) – Dana Lowell started designing lights for Greensboro Day School in 1988. He enjoys coming up with unusual ways to create scenery and lighting. One of his favorite creations was a spaceship set for the musical comedy Return to the Forbidden Planet. Mr. Lowell received his degree in design and technical direction from UNCG. During the late 1980's he was a comedian and on-air host for the local TV show “Billy Bob’s Action Theatre” at WGGT-TV 48. He enjoys building radio control model tanks and playing with his son Jack (GDS class of 2026).

Susan Kunar (Lower School Chorus) is the Lower School Music Specialist, teaching children from ages 4 to 4th grade. This year she also serves as the Upper School Choral Director and the Director of “Mixed Review”, an extra-curricular choral ensemble consisting of students and faculty. Susan is proud to offer her students many opportunities to perform including Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball games, The Carolina Theatre, and GDS Basketball games; as well as winter and spring concerts. First graders regularly perform at the Emeritus Assisted Living Center and fourth graders perform a Veteran's Day concert for several nursing homes in the Triad. Susan music directs musicals at Greensboro Day School and is also on staff at Calvary Baptist Church in Reidsville. She is a graduate of Meredith College and UNC-G. She has taught in elementary and middle schools since 1986 and has been at Greensboro Day School since 2000. She and her husband Bret have two children, Chloe and Alex.
